From Symptoms to Root Cause – A Comprehensive Diagnostic Approach

Comprehensive diagnostics to identify the root cause and support individualized treatment planning

From Symptoms to Root Cause

In dentistry, a symptom is often what prompts a patient to seek care – pain, sensitivity, inflammation, difficulty chewing, discomfort in the temporomandibular joints, muscle tension, or changes in aesthetics. However, the symptom does not always reveal the root cause of the problem.

At Laser Dental Clinic, diagnostics begin with a comprehensive assessment of the patient. Our aim is to determine not only what is affected, but also which biological, structural, and functional factors may contribute to the development and persistence of the problem.

MFSP™ – Medical Functional Stability Protocol

At the core of this approach is MFSP™ – Medical Functional Stability Protocol. The protocol organizes diagnostic information into a structured sequence and supports the development of an individualized treatment plan.

Depending on the individual clinical case, the assessment may include medical and dental history and clinical examination, evaluation of the teeth and periodontal tissues, occlusion and masticatory function, diagnostic imaging, and additional functional and laboratory assessments.

When clinically indicated, the diagnostic process may include methods for assessing muscle activity and occlusal balance, postural analysis, dental pulp testing, evaluation of electrochemical interactions between metallic materials, microbiological and genetic testing, and other appropriate diagnostic methods.

Individual findings are not considered in isolation. They are interpreted together with the patient’s history, clinical findings, and other diagnostic data in order to build the most comprehensive possible picture of the individual condition.

From Diagnosis to an Individualized Treatment Plan

Following the comprehensive assessment, treatment priorities and the sequence of the necessary stages are determined. When required, a stable biological foundation is first established through Initial Therapy – control of inflammation and infection, professional oral hygiene, and stabilization of the tissues.

Subsequent treatment decisions are determined according to the individual case and may include restorative, periodontal, endodontic, orthodontic, surgical, implant, prosthetic, or functional treatment.

In complex cases, BOSS – Biological, Occlusal and Structural Strategy integrates the biological, occlusal, and structural aspects of rehabilitation with the aim of achieving functional and long-term stability.

Treatment Does Not End with the Final Procedure

After completion of the active treatment phase, a Final Evaluation is performed to assess the achieved outcome in relation to the initial diagnosis and the individual treatment goals.

Long-term stability requires follow-up. Therefore, according to the individual risk profile and the achieved outcome, a maintenance program is established, including periodic clinical and functional assessment and professional preventive care.

In this way, diagnostics, treatment, and maintenance become one continuous process:

MFSP™ → Initial Therapy → BOSS → Final Evaluation → Long-Term Maintenance.

For us, a sustainable outcome begins with the right question – not only “Where is the symptom?” but “What is the cause?”
